Why our servers connected to yours

Pure Contact keeps business contact records accurate. To do that, it checks whether an email address can still receive mail. If your mail server logged a connection from probeN.northcheck.net, that was one of these checks.

What a check does

• We look up the mail server for the address's domain and connect to it.
• We identify ourselves as probeN.northcheck.net, ask whether the server would accept mail for one recipient (EHLO, MAIL FROM:<>, RCPT TO), and then disconnect with QUIT.
• We never send a message. No DATA command is issued, no content is transmitted, and nothing is delivered to anyone's mailbox.
• When a server declines the connection or asks us to slow down, we stop checking that server and back off.

Where checks come from

• IP range: 157.254.215.0/24
• Each address has matching forward and reverse DNS, probeN.northcheck.net.
• Envelope sender: empty (<>).

This domain and range are used only for verification. They do not send email.

Opt out

If you operate a mail server and do not want it checked, email abuse@northcheck.net with the domains or server addresses concerned. We add them to our do-not-check list and stop checking them.
